On national unity
The President of Malta seems to be misguided on the issue of national unity.
People cannot be united in a country in which there is no Rule of Law. Rule of Law ensures that all people are regarded as equal on all levels, most especially in the eyes of the Law. Therefore where injustices subsist, there can be no national unity.
There can be no national unity in a country when a minister can get away with money-laundering huge amounts of money, while a village butcher who gives customers credit gets charged for money laundering.
There can be no national unity in a country in which an assassin is helped by people in the Prime Minister’s office and the upper echelons Police Force.
There can be no national unity in a country where justice never sees the light of day, or sees it several years too late. Justice delayed, justice denied.
There can be no national unity in a country held hostage by kleptocrats and criminals.
There can be no national unity in a country when businesses are excluded from providing services to government departments as direct orders to pro-government cronies are the order of the day rather than the exception.
There can be no national unity in a country when people are appointed to positions because of their political allegiance rather than their abilities and competency.
There can be no national unity in a country where Freedom of Expression is stifled.
There can be no national unity in a country where a democracy is flawed.
There can be no national unity in a country where ministers trod on human rights.
There can be no national unity in a country in which the President sits silently, closing his ears, eyes and his mouth while impunity reigns, brazen and unfettered.
